Jenkins Independent Schools

Due to Letcher County's ORANGE status on the COVID-19 Current Incident Rate Map for Kentucky, Jenkins Independent Schools will continue with in-person instruction for the week of November 9 - 13, per state and local guidance.

Just a reminder that in person instruction begins tomorrow, November 4th, in the Jenkins Independent Schools. Buses will run regular routes in the morning. Class begins at 7:55 A.M. at Jenkins Middle High School and 7:45 at Burdine Elementary, If you are dropping your student off please do so no earlier that 7:20 at the Elementary and 7:30 at the Middle High School. The early start is due to the state mandating a 7 hour instructional day with the shortened school year.

If your child rode the bus last year and they are planning to ride the bus this year, they will need to be at the bus stop 10 to 15-minutes earlier, since school will take up earlier this year. Please make sure your child has a mask to wear on the bus and to school everyday. We appreciate your patience with our bus drivers as we iron out all the issues and schedules for our new bus routes.

Congratulations to the Burdine Elementary School Academic Team and Mrs. Gilliam on their first victory!! Our team competed in a virtual Quick Recall meet academic meet today against Arlee Boggs and came out winning 4-3! Good job guys! Keep up the hard work!!

The Jenkins Independent Schools will be offering in person remediation to students on October 28th, 29th, 30th and November 2nd. This is to let students catch up on overdue work from the 1st grading period. School buses will begin picking students up at 7:00 A.M. and school will begin at 8:00 A.M. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. If you are dropping off your student. please do so by the front door between 7:45 A.M. and 8:00 A.M. Students are advised to bring a bottle of water, their chrome book fully charged, and a mask. Masks will be provided if you don't have one. If you plan on attending and haven't been contacted please call the school.

We are at the end of the first nine weeks grading period. All work must be turned in by November 3rd to receive credit.

Good luck to our Girls Cross Country team at their Regional Meet at Lykins Park in Winchester this Saturday. The team is looking for back to back State appearances. There will be middle school boy's basketball sign-ups Monday at 6:00 in the JMHS Lobby. Any boy in grades 5th through 8th who are interested in playing, please come at this time. Remember to wear a mask and social distance. If you have any questions you can contact Coach Kevin Johnson.

Any girl in grades seven through twelve who are interested in playing High School Girls Basketball meet at the High School tomorrow October 20th at 4:00 pm.

Sign-ups for High School Boy's Basketball will be held Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00 pm at the high school football field. Any boy interested in playing high school basketball needs to attend. If you are interested in playing, but cannot attend the meeting, contact Coach Hairston at 859-556-7760 or Coach Potter at 634-9743. Also, remember to wear a mask and to social distance during the meeting.

Fall Break is Thursday, October 22 through Tuesday, October 27, 2020. School will resume on Wednesday, October 28.

All current 6th grade students need up to date shot records and physicals on file with the school. If you haven't taken your child to get their 6th grade shots and 6th grade physical, you need to do this as soon as possible. Thank you.

Any archery or softball player that has sold Knickerbocker pictures, the form and money are due tomorrow, October 14, 2020. This is the first fundraiser for these. The pictures are to be taken on October 23-24, 2020. Anyone that would like to have Knickerbocker pictures taken and have not been asked yet, please contact Candice Fields at (606) 832-2182 or (606) 821-8289. Payment of $10 is due by October 14, 2020. Christmas and fall backgrounds will be available.

Sixth, seventh , and eighth grade students will begin MAP testing this week. Sixth grade will test on Thursday, October 15th, seventh grade on Friday October 16th, and 8th grade on Monday October, 19th. Testing will be at the middle high school building begining at 9:00 AM and will end at 2:00 PM with the school providing lunch. Call the school at 832-2184 to arrange transportation by bus if needed.

We would like to invite you to our drive-thru pumpkin patch at Burdine Elementary School this Wednesday from 2:00-3:30!  Ms Susan Baker has worked with the Golden Apple to bring every boy and girl a pumpkin!  Ms Susan will have tasty pumpkin recipes so that you can cook your pumpkin after you’ve painted it with non-toxic paint!  Come by and see us while you pick out your great pumpkin at B.E.S.!

Greetings from the Jenkins Cavalier Theatre Troupe! We are currently looking for four individuals to complete our cast of characters for the upcoming Murder Mystery Dinner Theater show which will be held at Coal City Coffee. We specifically need at least one person to fill a male role. At this time, rehearsals are virtual, but this will change as Covid restrictions lift.
