My name is Mike Genton and I have been in education for 21 years. I have been with Trimble County Schools in Bedford, KY the past 17 years as a teacher, coach, asst. principal, and principal.
I am excited, appreciative, and humbled to be here and to accept this position with Jenkins Independent Schools. When I saw what Jenkins Independent had to offer as a school district I was very impressed. A distinguished district, smaller district, and community that supports the schools were all things that drew me to Jenkins Independent.
As we move forward our goal is to offer a quality educational product for all students. We have the opportunity to be part of something special here in Jenkins Independent Schools and my goal is to make us "the best" school district in eastern KY. How are we going to get there? I'm glad you asked. The four areas I plan to spend the majority of my time on are as follows:
Passion - Passion to teach and educate young people. There is no greater gift we can give than the gift of education. Education is the key to creating and building a successful life. We will teach with passion, we will be passionate about our extra-curricular activities, and we will be passionate about continually working to improve in all areas.
Transparency - We will strive to ensure that everyone will understand what our goals are and the plan to reach them. I also want your input in what is going on in this district and we will work to create a system which allows our students, staff, and parents to have a voice into what we are trying to accomplish.
Fiscal Responsibility - It is my charge to assure we are using the dollars, which are tax payer dollars, effectively and efficiently. All schools in the state are facing serious monetary issues and this district is facing these as well, probably even more so. So we will do our best to work within the constraints of the current budget we have while still offering a quality education to our students.
Innovative and effective teaching - We have to be willing to change the traditional education to meet the needs of today's students and teachers. We will create a great plan to identify student's needs and to address them. Our goal will be to create an education that meets the need of every individual student in Jenkins Independent Schools.
I plan to be a fixture in the community for years to come, and I encourage each of you to please introduce yourself to me. I will be accessible to meet with anyone, but you may want to call first to make sure I am in the office. I plan to spend a lot of time in the classrooms and out in the buildings the first couple months of school to get a feel on how things are going and what the strengths and growth areas are for Jenkins Independent Schools.
In closing, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes:
The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there. - John Buchan, novelist, historian and politician
Let us find greatness together. Go Cavs!
