Football Hosts CAVS Club After Practice Program

Why is Football important?  John Harbaugh said it best, “I believe there's practically no other place where a young man is held to a higher standard.  Football is hard. It's tough. It demands discipline. It teaches obedience. It builds character.  Football is a metaphor for life.”  The attitude towards Football, as well as other sports today is that everyone always wins.  Folks, that is not how life works.  Sure everyone wants to win and no one wants to lose but in a game as well as in life there will always be a winner and a loser. The important thing here is that we teach these young men how to win and lose in the correct way. By now I am sure you are thinking what does this guy know, the team finished 0-10, which means we won zero games and lost 10.  Believe it or not our kids learned more about sportsmanship this season than most teams we played.  Being dedicated to a sport that starts July 10th and ends at the first of November takes heart and dedication.  Not to mention the extra programs like weightlifting that Coach Chandler has initiated.  All successful Football teams have internal programs that hold the players accountable for themselves.  Now I get to brag on our team.  Coach Chandler implemented a program called CAVS Club in which we had 2 one hour study sessions weekly.  To play any sport at Jenkins an individual player must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average.  If the GPA drops below a 2.0 then the player becomes ineligible and WILL NOT play until it is raised.  With our low roster numbers we just can’t afford to lose a single player due to academics.  By starting the CAVS Club Coach Chandler made the athletes accountable to the coaches, the teachers, their teammates and most importantly themselves.  We are proud to announce that the 2017 Jenkins High School Football Team finished the season with an overall team GPA of 3.0.  This would fall in the top percentage of the state.  There is an old saying that goes along these lines,  If we keep winning these battles we will eventually win the war.  Go CAVS!!!
